The Henry County Relay for Life has been cancelled for 2020. Relay Chair David “Tater” Hayes said due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the American Cancer Society would not allow the event to be held this year.
“It’s very discouraging when you work to try and rebuild something and this happens.” Hayes said. Relay for Life organizers had rebuilt the annual event last year, changing the venue to downtown Paris. The event drew hundreds, with the Survivors’ dinner the same evening, camp sites, live music and the UT game shown on a big screen television.
Hayes said organizers are working on a drive-through luminaria service for this year and it also would be held downtown. He said details will be announced later. Relay is holding smaller events to raise money for the Cancer Society which have included a celebrity waiter dinner at Westfalia Farms and a Slurp and Burp event at the Paris Winery. Other smaller events will continue to be held.
