Howl-A-Ween Canine Costume Contests

Howl-a-Ween returns for its second year this Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the Atkins-Porter Dog Park in Paris, featuring two canine costume contests and a total of $100 in gift cards awarded to winners.

Festivities begin at 1 p.m. for small dogs, with costume voting at 1:30 p.m. The party starts for the big dogs at 2 p.m., with voting at 2:30 p.m. Each size category will have its own contest and winner.  Winners are chosen by popular vote and will receive $50 in gift cards for each size category, or $25 each in the event of a tie vote.

“Last year, we didn’t know what to expect,” according to Jodie Haywood, a dog park visitor who organized last year’s event with her daughter Lia.

“We ended up with a great turnout that was just the right size for a first-time event. This year, we’ve scheduled separate times for the small and large dogs to, hopefully, make it easier for us to manage and more enjoyable for the crowd,” Haywood says.

Haywood first contacted Paris Parks and Recreation Director Tony Lawrence last year for approval of the event, and this year, the parks crew are contributing gift cards for winners. As long as the community enjoys the event, Haywood says she’ll continue the annual tradition.

In case of rain: there will be a 3 hour rain delay, with an adjusted start time of 4pm for small dogs and 5pm for large dogs; or, if necessary, on Sunday at the original times.
